Israeli maritime border agreement with Lebanon: Israel claims ‘historic’ maritime border agreement with Lebanon

Israel’s prime minister said on Tuesday that the country had reached a “historic agreement” with neighboring Lebanon over their shared maritime border after months of US-brokered talks.

At stake are the rights to develop subsea natural gas reserves in areas of the eastern Mediterranean, which are claimed by two countries that do not have diplomatic relations.

Prime Minister Yair Lapid called the deal “a historic achievement that will bolster Israel’s security, invest billions in the Israeli economy and ensure the stability of our northern border.”

The agreement is expected to increase natural gas production in the Mediterranean. Lebanon hopes that gas exploration will help bring its country out of the growing economic crisis.

The final draft of the agreement will be presented to the interim government of Israel for approval just a few weeks before the country goes to the polls for the fifth time in less than four years.

Lebanon and Israel have been officially at war since Israel’s creation in 1948, and both countries claim about 860 square kilometers (330 sq mi) of the Mediterranean Sea.
